"I will lead them in paths that they have not known." (Isaiah 42:16)
I do not know what is around that next turn in this winding trail of life. But I know this -- whatever there is around that corner, I shall have my hand in Another's hand when I go and face it. And if I feel a little bit disturbed, I shall move my finger around in the palm of that hand till I find the scar, and then I shall know that Jesus Christ, who on the cross was wounded for my sins -- is not going to leave me no matter what corner I go around on the winding road of life. ~ W.B. "Uphold my steps in Your paths, that my footsteps may not slip!" (Psalm 17:5)
Somewhere between paralyzing fear and unrealistic vision casting is where most of us live, along a continuum of anxiety about the future. Some say, "A dream is your creative vision for your life in the future. You must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar and the unknown."
Others find worry and uncertainty around every corner, in career decisions, in relationships, in health and physical stablity.
But, says Job, whose today turned into a tomorrow of death, loss and suffering: "I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth." (Job 19:25)
So there you have it. In whom is my steadfast faith? The one who will, at the last, stand upon the earth, king of all, the trustworthy One.
I've written and said it before that my favorite Old Testament narrative is Numbers 21:4-9:
From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronzec serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. (ESV)
Trust not the conclusion that my fears lead me to -- a bronze serpent?! what?! how is that going to help?! -- that nothing can fix this situation, rescue this disaster, save my life. Don't murmur; don't turn to others to see what their opinions are. Their affirmation of your mess may bring on that paralyzing fear. Listen to God's call to trust Him, no matter how humanly irrational His answer may seem to be; trust that as God, His rationale is above and beyond ours, and if He has said His way is the way of life, then it is.
His way led the Son to the Cross and through the depths of wrath on behalf of my sin. His way leads me to trust such a love for the sake of my becoming more like His Son in obedience and holiness, and no matter how disturbing the way of the path might be, He will never leave me to travel it alone.
